Burning Politics

For the record, I do not hate Burning Man.

I have no substantial argument with anyone running it, attending it, promoting it, ingesting it, living it, loving it, enduring it, or being annoyed by it. I've made it a target for satire because I felt the timing was right and that it's evolution had earned for it the status of target.

I have bought tickets and will likely do so again, it's kind of the ultimate thing you can go do with camping gear and only minimal risk of breaking a limb.

I did once work for them, and left my job voluntarily. This says nothing about the festival or it's organizers, I've quit a great number of jobs. I had disagreements with individuals and some of the organization's decisions but in spite of this and in their defense I recommend examining exactly what they do and have to deal with. This is not a "normal" event, and draws a fanatical volunteer element that is both boon and bane. There have been growing pains and vast improvements since the days of overflowing porta-potties.

The event draws a widely diverse crowd, has it's own jargon and standards. It has affected some on a level usually reserved for religion, to mixed results. Closer examination of the mission documentation and implementation in practice shows a work in progress. The more fanatical factions often err in professing that the entire mission has been successful and sustained for some time leading me to suspect a massive state of cognitive dissonance.

Such examples of cognitive dissonance in society have historically made good targets for satire and Burning Man is no exception. Just like with Catholicism and other targets the creators and supporters of the satire receive some vitriolic response. Accusations of hatred are commonplace. To those who have attacked me, I personally forgive your ignorant attacks.

I've made fun of Burning Man because it's really quite silly in many ways, grown to the size of a slow-moving target. However, it's still a really good time and in proper perspective should continue and thrive because a massive temporary camping city with slightly relaxed civic rules satisfies a primal human urge or this thing wouldn't have reached attendances in excess of 40,000 people with an accumulative attendance that has exceeded 100,000.

Beware of anyone offering Kool-Aid. Bring your own, that's radical self reliance anyway.
